About Pokémon Black and White

Pokémon Black and White released in March 2011 for Nintendo DS, introducing the New York-inspired Unova region. The original Unova Pokédex spans 156 species, entirely new Pokémon for the first half of the game before national-dex Pokémon trickle in post-story. Gen 5 starters Snivy, Tepig and Oshawott join box legendaries Reshiram (Black) and Zekrom (White) plus a story focused on the ideals/truth conflict between Team Plasma and N. Browse the full Unova roster below in any of the nine supported languages.

Frequently asked questions

How many Pokémon are in Pokémon Black and White?

The original Unova Pokédex contains 156 species, all of which are new to Generation 5 during the main story. National Pokédex Pokémon become available after the Elite Four.

What are the starter Pokémon in Black and White?

Snivy (Grass), Tepig (Fire) and Oshawott (Water). Their final evolutions are Serperior, Emboar and Samurott.

Why are there no older Pokémon in the main story?

Black and White was the first mainline entry to enforce a region-only Pokédex during the campaign. All 156 main-story species are new to Gen 5 to give Unova its own identity. National Dex Pokémon trickle in after the player defeats the Elite Four.

Which Pokémon are exclusive to Black vs White?

Black exclusives: Weedle, Kakuna, Beedrill, Murkrow, Honchkrow, Houndour, Houndoom, Plusle, Volbeat, Cottonee, Whimsicott, Gothita, Gothorita, Gothitelle, Vullaby, Mandibuzz, Tornadus, Reshiram. White exclusives: Caterpie, Metapod, Butterfree, Paras, Parasect, Misdreavus, Mismagius, Poochyena, Mightyena, Minun, Illumise, Petilil, Lilligant, Solosis, Duosion, Reuniclus, Rufflet, Braviary, Thundurus, Zekrom. Throh and Sawk are semi-exclusive: both appear in both games but each is far more common in one version.

What's different about Pokémon Black 2 and White 2?

BW2 (2012) is a direct sequel set two years later. The Updated Unova Pokédex expands to 301 species, the world adds new areas (Aspertia, Floccesy, Virbank, Castelia Sewers), and post-game content includes the Pokémon World Tournament, Pokéstar Studios and Join Avenue.
