About Pokémon Crystal
Pokémon Crystal released in December 2000 in Japan (July 2001 worldwide) for Game Boy Color as the third-version Johto game. The Johto Pokédex spans 251 species, weaving the original Kanto roster together with 100 new Johto Pokémon. Crystal was the first mainline entry to add battle animations, the option of a female protagonist, a story role for the legendary beast Suicune and the post-game Battle Tower. Browse the full Johto-Kanto roster below in any of nine languages, filter by type, and click any Pokémon for its cross-language names.
Frequently asked questions
How many Pokémon are in Pokémon Crystal?
Crystal's Johto Pokédex covers 251 species, weaving the 100 new Johto Pokémon through the original 151 Kanto Pokémon that the player encounters in the post-game region.
What's the difference between Pokémon Crystal and Gold or Silver?
Crystal added animated sprite intros for every Pokémon, gave Suicune a dedicated scripted storyline (the Burned Tower arc) instead of the Gold/Silver roaming behaviour while keeping Raikou and Entei as roamers, introduced the option of a female protagonist (Kris) for the first time in the series, and added the post-game Battle Tower. The species roster itself is identical to Gold and Silver.
Can you play as a girl in Pokémon Crystal?
Yes. Crystal introduced Kris, the first female playable protagonist in the main series. Players choose between Kris and the male protagonist (officially named Gold) at the start of the game.
Is Pokémon Crystal playable on modern hardware?
Yes. Crystal was re-released on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console in 2018. For current availability on Nintendo Switch, check Nintendo's official Game Boy – Nintendo Classics catalogue.
Were any new Pokémon added in Crystal?
No. Crystal uses the same 251-Pokémon roster as Gold and Silver. The differences are presentation (battle animations), story changes (Suicune's questline), and added post-game content (the Battle Tower and a Move Tutor in Goldenrod City).
